Getting rich by playing video games. That sounds like a dream job, right? Obviously you’ll need awesome gaming skills but there is enough money in e-sports to make this happen. Let’s take a look at six games that could make you a millionaire!
1. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft – 2.2 million dollar worldwide
Even though the card game Hearthstone is not even two years old, Blizzard and others companies have organized several major tournaments with a total prize pool exceeding 2 million dollars. At BlizzCon 2014 there was a quarter million dollars up for grabs for the best and most tactical card players out there. The most successful players are from China, followed by the United States, South Korea and Germany.
2. SMITE – 3.5 million dollars worldwide
SMITE is a bit of a newcomer in the world of MOBAS, but developer Hi-Rez Studios is betting big on E-Sports. With the launch of the game they organized a two hundred thousand dollar tournament. They certainly topped that this year with a 2.6 million dollar World Championship! The biggest ballers in SMITE are from the United States, followed by Denmark, the UK and Canada.
3. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – 6.5 million dollars worldwide
Before Counter-Strike Global Offensive got big, everybody was playing Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source. These two old games already had a total combined prize pool of 13 million dollars up until now. CS:GO is the newest version of this team based shooter with a total amount of 6.5 million dollars of awarded prize money. In general Swedish players are the most successful.
4. Starcraft II – 17 million dollars worldwide
The first Starcraft laid the foundations for E-Sports and is responsible for creating the first superstars in professional gaming. Starcraft 2 lives up to its predecessor and has offered an amazing 17 million dollar of prize money to the best players in various tournaments over the years. The best players in the world are all from South Korea, even though there has been some success by Chinese, American and European players.
5. League of Legends – 23 million dollars worldwide
League of Legends is without a doubt one of the most popular games on the planet right now. No wonder the best players in the world earn a lot of money. With all the big and the smaller tournaments combined players have earned over 23 million dollars worldwide. The Korean gamers have won the most of that money, followed by Chinese, American and Russian players. The next big tournament is in October.
6. DOTA 2 – 50 million dollars worldwide
In August the biggest prize pool in gaming up until now was given to the best players at The International 2015. Valve’s DOTA 2 is huge in the world of E-Sports. The International had a prize pool exceeding 18 million dollars which is insane. In the last four years over 50 million dollars worth of prize money has been distributed over the best DOTA 2 players in the world. Most of this money has been won by the Chinese, followed by the Americans, Canadians and Swedish.
If you want to become a pro gaming millionaire you could also try Splatoon, because Nintendo is doing a 1 million dollar tournament in Japan next year. And if shooters are more your thing, there will be a 1 million dollar Halo 5 tournament later this year. Good luck future gaming millionaires!
