The videogame business has had its fair share of controversies and commotion over the years. Everybody remembers PETA freaking out about Pokemon and the uproar about the San Andreas’ Hot Coffee Mod. In that perspective 2015 was relatively calm but there still was some nasty business. Here is our top 5 – Gaming controversies of the year!
5. Silent Hills and P.T. cancelled
Once upon a time Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro would make a game called Silent Hills. Kojima and Del Toro even made a Playable Teaser with ‘Walking Dead’ actor Norman Reedus starring as the main character. Then all of a sudden publisher Konami decided to cancel the entire project. It was a big shock to horror fans and many gamers asked the question what the hell was going on over at Konami.
4. Deus Ex Pre-order Tiers
Square-Enix had an original idea for the Deus Ex Pre-order campaign. A system where you could only pick one reward from each “tier”, and more tiers would only be unlocked by more people preordering the game. The final tier even promised to release the game four days early. It made it impossible for gamers to get every rewards which led to many angry fans. Luckily Square-Enix quickly came to their senses and scrapped the whole thing. “We never asked for this” never felt more appropriated.
3. Batman Arkham Knight PC
Almost everybody looked forward to Batman: Arkham Knight and upon release it seemed to be a pretty good game. Except for the PC-version, because that turned out to be a train-wreck riddled with bugs. It suffered from frame-dips and stutters, making the game almost unplayable. Rocksteady and Warner Bros. pulled the game from digital stores and later released a patch to repair the issues, but this didn’t help that much. The PC version is still such a mess that Warner Bros. is giving full refunds on both the game and the season pass.
2. Nintendo censoring their Western releases (Boobslider Xenoblade Chronicles X EU, NA & Fatal Frame outfits)
Naughty Nintendo! The Japanese videogame giant secretly changed a couple of Western versions of games to make them less controversial. They minimalized the boobslider in the Western release of Xenoblade Chronicles X. They also removed the slutty outfits from the Western version of Fatal Frame on the Wii U. This definitely proves that Nintendo sees a big difference between what’s OK in Japan and what’s OK over here.
1.Konami vs Hideo Kojima
Konami. It’s an understatement to say that 2015 wasn’t the best year for the Japanese software company. It almost fully withdrew itself from the console video game business and completely alienated superstar developer Hideo Kojima. Metal Gear Solid 5 is probably the best game Kojima has ever made and Konami thanked him for it by removing his name from the box. They even banned him from attending the Game Awards so he couldn’t pick up his award! That’s not how you treat a former employee and company legend, Konami! Shame on you!
